Prologue

1999, December 21; The First Day of Winter (Age 5, Amara)

My family and I went on a vacation to Canada. We were shopping when I saw a stuffed bear I wanted.

I was just about to grab it when it disappeared. I looked around in confusion and saw it near the door.

Every time I tried to grab it, it would disappear and go somewhere even further away from my parents each time,

eventually leading me into a forest then a wide area with trees taller than anything I've ever seen before. They

blocked out the sun making it hard to see. My eyes explored the place and found the bear next to a single grave

in the middle of the entire forest. When I reached out to the bear one last time, I fell down and the trees disappeared.

Then it started to rain fluffy, white petals that dissolved when you touched it.

It was beautiful, much prettier than anything else I've ever seen before. The longer I waited, the more petals

fell. A silent breeze started whirling about. Everything was so comfortable, I fell asleep.

That night.. there was a blizzard.

2005, November 15. 7°C/45°F (Age 10, Amara)

" Mom, Mom ! I'm going to the library with Nina ! " I yelled from upstairs as I grabbed my jacket and library card.
" Okay, sweetie. Have fun! " She yelled back while trying to make a cheesecake.
I ran out the door followed by a huge slam.

Nina is my bestfriend but we're almost complete opposites.

" Ssss. Why do you always take so long? It's freezing out here. " Nina shivered. She hated the cold more than anything.

" You were only here for two minutes, Nina. Quit complaining. Why do you hate the cold so much anyways? "
"Why wouldn't you? It's sunny most of the time here in Sapheart, then there's this random wind that won't stop

til February. "
I sighed and replied with, " Yeah, sure. Let's just get to the library before my brother sees you. "

My brother never liked Nina. When we were about six, Nina found a rat at the park and stuck it straight in

Jerome's face then it bit his nose. He wouldn't stop crying til our mom came to pick us up.

5°C/41°F (Age 11, Nina)

Every step I took made everything seem a million times colder. I wanted to race Amara to the library but she couldn't run.

We only walked half a block and the library was three blocks away. I hid my breath behind my scarf and shivered.

4°C/39°F
It was way too cold now for me to handle. I stopped walking and looked at Amara. She stopped walking and

turned back.

" What's wrong? " She asked.
I didn't reply. I just looked at her then around. My eyes kept moving back and forth from her to the street. Amara was afraid
of being alone so I couldn't leave her but I was too cold. My scarf fell down so the fuzz wasn't in my eyes anymore.

" Nina, what's wrong? " She said again with a worried expression. She took a step closer.
I crouched down and glanced beside me. Grass. The grass had it.

Frost

I read it, but I'm not quite sure what the prologue has to do with anything. ;-;
